Michigan Stories: Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw Opening Reception

Michigan Stories: Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw opens this Friday, Nov. 17, at 7pm, featuring a live performance by Jim Shaw and Cary Loren from Destroy All Monsters at 7:30pm. This will be Jim Shaw's first performance in Michigan since 1976—are you coming? Against the backdrop of 1960s counterculture, Kelley and Shaw shared a lifelong friendship and upbringing in the state of Michigan. They met in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan, then moved to Los Angeles in 1976 to pursue graduate school at CalArts. Michigan Stories is the first exhibition to place their practices alongside each other in a historical context, exploring how both artists culled materials from the vernacular cultures native to their Midwestern upbringing and education.
