2020 Master of Fine Arts Exhibition
The Master of Fine Arts Exhibition, on view Mar. 21–Dec. 12, 2020, was the culmination of a three-year program in which artists explored their creative practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee.

Visual Citizenship
This exhibition, on view Feb. 22–Dec. 5, 2020, gathered prints and photographs from the MSU Broad collection, and challenged visitors to engage with images as tools of civic participation and political action. The works prompted us to reconsider citizenship within and beyond our relationship to state power: Who defines what it means to be a citizen, and who is absented from that discussion?

John Lucas and Claudia Rankine: Situations
The MSU Broad presented, for the first time in a solo exhibition, the entire series of Situation videos collaboratively produced by documentary filmmaker John Lucas and poet Claudia Rankine. The videos, on view Feb. 8–Dec. 20, 2020, are responses to contemporary life that foreground the public and private experiences of Black Americans. They address explicit acts of racism—racially motivated murders and police violence—and the racist aggressions in our daily lives.
Seven of the nine Situations videos in the exhibition are available online here, offering an intimate viewing experience. We want to draw specific attention to Situation 8. The video contains cell phone, security, and police dashboard camera footage depicting lethal violence against black people. Continue your own anti-racist learning journey with a list of reading materials from the MSU Broad Citizen Learning Library, carefully selected from the MSU Libraries by the artists and MSU Broad staff.
Who is a Citizen?
Who Is a Citizen?, on view Sept. 26, 2020–Mar. 21, 2021 at the MSU Broad Art Lab, presented new prose, poetry, and moving-image works made by MSU students in response to the videos in John Lucas and Claudia Rankine: Situations. The student artists explored hybrid media genres to advocate for racial equity and a more just society.

Science of Grief: Rituals Around the World Panel Discussion
On Saturday, Mar. 20, 2021, the MSU Broad hosted a panel discussion on the science of grief, moderated by Dr. John Waller (Associate Professor of the History of Science and Medicine at MSU) and featured panelists Dr. Ruth Toulson (Professor of Humanities at MICA), Dr. Rocío Quispe-Agnoli (Professor of Post-Colonial Latin American Studies at MSU), Dr. Emilie Ndione Diouf (Assistant Professor of English at Brandeis University), and Maree Clarke (Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta, BoonWurrung/Wemba Wemba woman, curator, and artist).
This event was presented in partnership with Science Gallery Detroit.
