The Edge of Desire: Visual Regimes of Fascism and Dissidence

Wednesday, Nov. 06, 2019    7–8:30pm

Feminist theorists of visual culture have pointed to the edge as a site revealing, and at times challenging, the politics of the visible. The fascist regimes in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile challenged by the artists on view in The Edge of Things: Dissident Art Under Repressive Regimes worked not only through erasure, but also through the erotics of their own power, power that also depended on the traffic between the visible and fantasies of the occluded. This talk by Dr. Lessie Jo Frazier considers questions of gender and sexuality in the embodied politics of human rights activists’ challenges to counter-revolutionary, fascist re-makings of what could be perceived and what should be politically desired.

Dr. Frazier is Associate Professor of Gender Studies and History at Indiana University. She is a co-editor of Gender's Place: Feminist Anthropologies of Latin America.

The Edge of Things: Dissident Art Under Repressive Regimes is on view through January 5, 2020 at the MSU Broad.
