Refabricate: Yardage

Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019    12–6pm

Refabricate begins with the basic t-shirt in your closet. Join Michigan-based artist Mark Rumsey as he collaborates with Community Open Call to examine topics of consumption and labor in our era of globalization. This participatory community project deconstructs and reconstructs the ubiquitous t-shirt, challenging us to consider the labor and waste embedded in our world of fast fashion consumption.

Refabricate: Yardage invites members of the community to observe or become part of the community workforce and work alongside the artist to dissemble donated t-shirts, cutting the fabric into uniform widths to be sewn together. This process returns the t-shirts to a raw material, a bolt of fabric ready to become something new.

We need your t-shirts! If you have clean t-shirts available for raw material, bag them up, and include the zip code that they are coming from. Drop off donations at the MSU Broad Art Lab (565 E. Grand River Ave.) February 9–17 during our open hours.

Interested in volunteering your labor to Refabricate? We need folks to sort, catalog, cut, sew, and package. Sign-up to volunteer here.

Refabricate is part of the Community Open Call, an experimental platform that invites the community to become a central figure in the planning process for the arts and cultural programming offered at the MSU Broad Art Lab. This initiative is supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
