Community Curatorial Assistant Event: Help Plan a Michigan Home Care Worker Exhibit

Wednesday, Apr. 03, 2019    4–6pm

Come to the MSU Broad Art Lab and help plan an exhibit on home care workers in Michigan. Over the past year and with grant support from the American Folklife Center/Library of Congress, MSU researchers Dr. Clare Luz and Khalid Ibrahim have recorded stories and images of personal care aides (PCAs)—an undervalued but critical workforce that makes it possible for older adults to live at home for as long and independently as possible. Now they, along with project teammates Dr. Marsha MacDowell and Katherine Hanson, need help in choosing images and stories for a forthcoming traveling exhibition.

Think the topic has no connection with you? It is one that will affect every one of us, personally and collectively. The population is rapidly aging which has led to a higher demand for and drastic shortage of paid PCAs who provide in-home support with daily tasks such as bathing, walking, cooking, and caregiver respite. This exhibition will help raise awareness of the lives and work of PCAs though their own stories. When have you had a chance to help “curate” such an exhibition? Please come, preview possible images and stories, and help us “get this exhibition right.”

Held at the Art Lab, located directly across the street from the museum at 565 E Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI 48823.
