An Evening in the Floating World
Join us for an engaging evening as Dr. Ethan Segal guides us through the “floating world” of early modern Japan and its vibrant arts scene, which produced notable works and styles from kabuki theater and haiku poetry to ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Dr. Segal will offer an informative introduction to early modern Japan, highlighting woodblock prints and artists who remain famous even today, the culture that allowed them to become so successful, and specific prints in the MSU collection. With lots of opportunity for questions and conversation, this is an introduction to Japanese art that you won’t want to miss.
This talk is being held in conjunction with Scholar’s Garden, on view in the Collection Gallery at the MSU Broad through February 9, 2020.
Professor Ethan Segal is an East Asian historian and Chairperson of the Japan Council at MSU. He earned his Ph.D. at Stanford University and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Tokyo. Topics of his research include economic and social history, women and gender in pre-modern Japan, nationalism and history education, and popular culture and film. He has received numerous teaching awards at MSU and regularly gives talks at conferences and on campuses around the world.
